W: Hi, Chris. Our heating isn’t working. Can you come and repair it tomorrow?

M: Wednesday? That’s difficult. How about Thursday or Friday afternoon?

W: The sooner the better. 

(Text 2) 

W: You look tired. Did you stay up late last night?

M: No. I went to bed early but I didn’t sleep well. I was thinking of today’s exam all the time.

(Text 3)

M: Well, I will see my sister off after I finish the report.

W: Oh, in that case, you must hurry. The plane takes off in fifty minutes.

M: Looks like I have to leave it to tomorrow.

(Text 4)

W: Can you tell me what the conductor said? I couldn’t hear it.

M: I couldn’t hear either. I hope there are no station changes.

W: I’m already late for work. And I hope there’s no traffic jam either.

M: I hope so.

W: Are you going to try some of this chocolate cake? It’s delicious!

M: Well, to be honest with you, I’ve never been a big fan of chocolate.

(Text 6)

M: Hey, what’s this?

W: Oh, it’s that show where they have to answer questions about the biggest natural wonders. Last week a man won a trip to Egypt to visit the pyramids.

M: The pyramids? We studied those in school. Let’s watch and see where they get to go this week. 

W: Oh, wait a minute. That’s the same guy — it’s the same show as last week. I don’t want to see the same thing again. Can we see the film on Channel 10?

M: Oh, come on, Grandma. Just for a minute! I haven’t seen it. Please.

M: Hello, I’d like to see Mr Hunter, please. I’m here about the job. I’m Ricky Carter.

W: Sorry, he isn’t here at the moment. I’m Stella Watson, Mr Hunter’s partner. Have a seat, please.

M: Thank you.

W: I’ve got some questions, Mr Carter. Can you use a computer?

M: No, I can’t. But I can play computer games very well.

W: That’s nice. And how many languages can you speak?

M: Erm, just one.

W: And what’s that? French? Spanish?

M: No, English. Excuse me. How many windows are there in the building?

W: I beg your pardon? The windows? Are you applying for the assistant manager’s job?

M: Me? No, I’m a window cleaner.

W: I finished my report on the French Revolution last night.

M: How did you finish it so fast? I’m still trying to find books about it.

W: There was something about the French Revolution on TV last week. I wrote down the names of all the people who were on the show.

M: What did you do next?

W: I went to the library and looked for their books. It was very easy, especially because I already understood what they wanted to say.

M: Why did Ms Dessard make us write about French history, anyway? She’s a French language teacher, not a history teacher.

W: Ms Dessard said that if we want to understand the language, we should understand the culture. I don’t know if I speak better French, but I know more about French history now. If the French Revolution had never happened, French would be a very different language.

M: You’re right.

M: So how was your adventure vacation?

W: It was wonderful! The beaches were great. And there was a rain forest and a mountain in the centre of the island where you could go rock climbing.

M: Wow! Did you go climbing?

W: Well, we went to the bottom of the mountain, spent four hours going to the forest, but then I just felt too tired, so I had to stand at the bottom and watched the others.

M: I don’t blame you. So what else did you do?

W: I spent a lot of time on the beach. I tried diving. It was great! Oh, and I saw a dolphin when I was underwater.

M: Wow! Did you go bungee jumping?

W: I wanted to, but I realised I was scared of heights, so I just gave up. Quite by chance, the engine was broken on the boat, so they had to call the sailing trip off.

M: That’s a shame. So what was the most exciting part of the trip?

W: Probably exploring the old caves. I’d never done it before, and thought it was great.

W:In case you don’t know, the Quarter is an area of narrow old streets full of attractive little shops. It’s next to the railway station in the west of the town. 

You can find some wonderful shops in the Quarter. People love High Flyers, a shop which sells kites. Kites of every shape and size and colour you can possibly imagine, and they were all made by the owners of the shop, Dave and Miranda. Their kites are beautiful but rather expensive; but every Tuesday afternoon they give free practical classes on how to make on your own. 

While you’re in the Quarter you’ll probably want to look at clothes and jewellery. Dressed to Kill and Togged Up are two shops that are always crowded with young students. That’s because they sell great clothes that look as good as a lot of the top designer stuff, but cost half the price.

If you’re interested in second-hand things, and you don’t mind getting up early on Sunday morning you should go and see the weekly Flea Market in Princess Court. Among the second-hand furniture, books, pictures and clocks, you can find the bargain but you’d better pay attention to this — there is also a lot of rubbish! The market closes at midday but the Hot Links coffee bar nearby, which is a meeting place for young artists and designers, is open all day six days a week.
