Such is human nature that people tend to look for an idol in their life, holding the belief that they can become better by following the example of their idol. However, we can set the example by changing ourselves and becoming the person we want to be.
I can’t help recalling the time when I first entered high school. Having failed the entrance exam, I was admitted to an ordinary high school, which disappointed me a lot. I was very bitter and rude, looking down upon everyone at school. Then one day I told myself I couldn’t be like this any longer. Maybe I shouldn’t look for someone to admire but should change myself first. I tried to improve myself a bit and tried to be friendlier to others. As a result, I found myself a lot happier and I was even awarded the title of “Excellent Student” at the end of term.
Life is a constant exercise in self-improvement. Changing yourself to a better self is definitely better than looking for someone better to imitate. Change yourself, and you will make the earth a better world day by day.

W: Are they harmful to the brain?
M: Scientists have started a series of studies to identify the effects of the drugs on the brain, but the effects on the nervous system have not been known for a long time.
W: How is the study going?
       M: The scientists have gained some insight into the costs and benefits of the anti-anxiety drugs. And they have learned that two effects of the drugs are obviously harmful. The harmful effects may make the price of anti-anxiety drugs too high.

W: You can say that again. If I want to go camping and fishing, I go to the Red River area. For complete quiet I can hide away in my house with a good book from one of our public libraries.

W: But have you heard about third-hand smoke?
M: Third-hand smoke? I’m afraid not. What is that then?
W: Well, it is here in today’s paper. Parents may think they are protecting children from second-hand smoke when they smoke outside their home or only when the children are not there.
M: So it does no harm to the children.
W: No, thing is not like what you thought. Researchers are warning about what they call third-hand smoke. When you smoke dangerous matter from cigarettes get into your hair and clothing. As babies are the weakest, when you come to a baby, you pass it to the baby and increase the chances of disease in the baby.
M: Is that so? In that case I have to say that I should never get close to a baby.
W: That’s right. Actually all smoking parents should do the same or better give it up completely.
M: Do you mean I must do something for our upcoming baby from now on?
W: Good, honey! You have the point!

Deep Springs is an American college. It is an unusual college. It is high in the White Mountains in California, not in a college town. The campus is a collection of old buildings, with no beautiful classrooms. The only college-like thing about Deep Springs is its library. Students can study from the 18,000 books 24 hours a day. The library is never crowded as there are only 24 well-qualified male students at the college. In addition, there are only five full-time professors. These teachers believe in the idea of this college. They need to believe in it! They do not get much money. In fact, their salaries are only about $9,000 a year plus room and meals. The school gives the young teachers as well as the students something more important than money.
       “There is no place like Deep Springs,” says a second-year student from New York State. “Most colleges today are much the same, but Deep Springs is not afraid to be different.” He says that students at his college are in a situation quite unlike in other schools. Students are there to learn, and they cannot run away from problems. There is no place to escape to! Besides talking to each other or their teachers, Deep Springs’ students may go to the library or go for a walk in the desert since there is not even a television set on campus.
