W: I’m sorry, Mr. Miller, but my husband isn’t at home. He’s at work now.

W: I was late for school four times this month.

M: I was late twice that often, and Tom was late several times.

W: Could you please help me paint my apartment this weekend, Steven?

M: Oh, sorry, I’m going fishing. I decided to enjoy myself for a change. I spent last weekend helping my mom do her garden and I need to repair my car next weekend.

W: Dinner is ready.

M: I’m coming. Wow, so much food! Why so much food?

W: It’s your birthday today. Remember?

M: Oh, I forgot it.

W: Why so early?

M: Early? It’s 6 o’clock now. School starts at 7: 45 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. 

W: In my country, we go to school from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

M: Gosh!

W: The service is really slow here. I’ve been trying to get the waiter’s attention for the last ten minutes.

M: I hope he will wait on us soon. I’m very hungry, and I have a class at two o’clock.

W: Me, too. I recognize that is an English book. You must be a student at the English Center.

M: Yeah. I’m in the fourth class. Are you a student there, too?

W: Yes. I’m in the fifth class. 

M: I just came here two weeks ago. Do you like the institute?

W: It’s pretty good. I think I’ve learned a lot so far.

M: Yeah. I only wish the classes were a little smaller though, because we don’t get enough chance to talk, but I like my teachers a lot.

Text 7 

W: Can I help you?

M: Yes, I’d like to read some articles that are on reserve in the library for anthropology 311.

W: Professor Giler’s class?

M: That’s right. How did you know?

W: Let’s just say you are not the first person coming in asking for those articles.

M: I see. Well, since I haven’t read any of them yet, it doesn’t really matter which one you give me first.

W: I’m afraid I can’t give you any of them at the moment. They’ve all been borrowed.

M: You’re kidding, all of them?

W: I’ve asked Professor Gilers twice already to bring in additional copies of the articles, but no sooner do I place them on the shelves than they are gone. See that girl in the black sweater? She’s been waiting for half an hour for those same articles to be returned.

M: And I went out of my way to free the whole afternoon to read.

W: I’m sorry, but there is nothing I can do now. All I can suggest is that you come early tomorrow morning and try again. We open at eight.

W: What can I do for you, sir?

M: Are there any rooms still available?

W: A double room or single room?

M: A double room, please.

W: Just a moment. Let me check. Oh, yes. We still have two double rooms free. One is on the tenth floor and the other is on the second floor. Which one would you prefer?

M: I’d prefer the one on the tenth floor. By the way, is there hot water at this hour?

W: Yes, it is available 24 hours.

M: What’s the price, please?

W: 215 dollars a day. How many days would you like to stay?

M: Three days.

W: Would you please show me your ID card and fill in this form, please?

M: Here you are.

W: All right. That attendant will help you carry your luggage to your room.

M: Thanks.

M: Are you looking forward to your trip to Japan, Angola?

W: Yeah, I can’t wait, Keith. But I’m a bit scared of the journey. Although my husband insists on flying, I would prefer to go by boat. Planes make me nervous.

M: Nothing to be frightened of. How many planes fly across oceans every day?

W: I’ve no idea. Hundreds, I suppose.

M: And how often do you hear about an accident? Once or twice a year?

W: Yes, but planes fly so high and fast that once is enough.

M: There are more road accidents per day than air deaths per year. Flying is the safest way to travel.

W: I still prefer to go by sea. Ships may not travel fast but at least you can relax. I’d love a trip on a splendid ship like Queen Elizabeth II.

M: That’s fine if you’re a good sailor and you’re used to big waves. Have you ever traveled far in a rough sea?

W: No. I’ve only been on a boat once. I cruised down the Mississippi on a sightseeing tour. I might not be used to rough sea, but I’d still rather be seasick than dead.

Text 10. 

M: You did a really great job last time. Today, I’d like you to do a few loads of laundry. Please

make sure to separate the lights and darks and to follow the washing instructions. Hang up anything you think might shrink in the dryer. You can fold the clothes and then when I get home I’ll show you where to put everything away. Then the fridge needs cleaning. Feel free to rearrange everything in an organized manner. Oh, and don’t forget the freezer. I’ll probably get you to do the oven the next time, because we’re going to be hosting a dinner party at the end of the month. The kids need to be picked up at school at 3:30. You should leave the house 15 minutes before then in order to leave yourself enough time to get there. While they’re at school, I’d love it if you could organize their toys. The playroom is really messy. If there are any toys you think the kids would not play with, just put them in a basket and I’ll sort them through.
